Userkind is a Sydney UX and UI design agency founded by Garreth Wills and Lucie Bertiau. We bring experience in advertising, visual design and technology to creating websites that express a brand and serve its customers.
Two creative perspectives, working closely together.
Friends long before founding Userkind, Garreth and Lucie continue to design hands-on and collaborate on most projects.
Garreth’s background in advertising brings a focus on storytelling: how an experience unfolds, what people need to understand and how content connects. Lucie’s personal creative practice spans illustration, interiors and other artistic pursuits, informing her approach to space, composition and visual expression. Both bring a strong technical understanding to the work.
Those perspectives overlap throughout a project. Lucie helps shape the experience and content through a visual design lens. Garreth reviews the design through the story it tells and the journey it creates. Together, they explore ideas and work through difficult problems, refining how the website looks, reads and works.
Garreth Wills
Connecting the story, the experience and the delivery.
Garreth’s career spans brand marketing, art direction and digital product development.
Brand and storytelling.
⎯ He spent eight years in Japan, including four with Levi’s Japan, where he introduced product collaborations as a way to connect the brand with new fashion audiences. One initiative brought New York artist Futura together with Levi’s. Garreth approached the artist and designed a limited-edition range of premium Levi’s vintage products using his artwork. An accompanying website revealed the collection through an episodic series of art videos.
Leading digital projects.
⎯ That work developed into art direction for fashion and lifestyle advertising, combining creative concepts with hands-on design and project leadership.
Over ten years in a creative agency, Garreth led digital projects across ecommerce, marketing websites and business platforms. Initially responsible for UX, UI and product management, he later led a growing design team while continuing to direct development and delivery. The work built practical knowledge of the technology, content and search requirements involved in taking a website from an idea to a live business tool.
Shaping the experience.
⎯ At Userkind, Garreth leads client relationships and defines the experience with each client. He shapes the content structure and product direction, then stays involved through design, development and launch to ensure the final website tells a cohesive story and delivers the intended experience.
Lucie Bertiau
Bringing artistic judgement and technical understanding to interface design.
Lucie combines an artistic background with front-end development experience and more than a decade of specialist UI design.
From development to design.
⎯ Lucie began her digital career in front-end development. Building websites meant resolving design decisions that had not yet been fully considered, and she found herself increasingly drawn to that work. A design role at a digital agency followed, making design her main focus.
Structure and expression.
⎯ Her experience includes designing an entire application for managing workflows across dealership businesses, turning complex information and dashboards into clear, usable interfaces. She has also crafted innovative marketing website designs for Audi and UNSW.
Her personal creative work in interior design and illustration informs her eye for space, composition and detail, alongside a strong grounding in design theory and typography.
Leading creative delivery.
⎯ At Userkind, Lucie leads the visual direction and often designs projects from beginning to end. She works closely with developers to explore how features will function and how they can be built efficiently.
She reviews the build as it progresses and after content population, refining design and content together so the finished experience retains its clarity and character.
DIRECT COLLABORATION
Working directly with the people shaping your website.
Garreth leads the client relationship and the overall experience. Lucie leads the visual direction and design delivery. Both stay actively involved in the work.
That continuity keeps the thinking connected. Decisions about content, design and functionality are made with an understanding of the original ambition and the practical requirements of bringing it to life.
